The second episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke aired last night and thus I am reviewing it for you! The AHS reviews will now be on Thursdays from now on, so get used to it! This review will contain full spoilers for the episode, so read ahead at your own risk, but do read ahead anyway, you know you want to.
This episode adds on everything great about the last episode, it ramps up the tension and the horror for an honestly astonishing episode. I want to say right now before I say anything more, this season is the best one yet. This episode has confirmed for me that this is the highest point for AHS and I can only assume it will get even better. This episode further explains some of the backstories to the scary events taking place in the house and surrounding areas through a lengthy flashback about the horrible nurses we glimpse last episode.
One of the standout moments this episode was the introduction of the family of Lee’s family, most notably her daughter Flora. She becomes a driving force behind this episode as she visits the house for the first time and encounters something that she refers to as her friend. This “friend” is a sinister girl who seems to be a ghost from the mysterious colony we keep getting looks at, the episode concludes with the horrible moment that Flora follows this girl into the woods and Shelby & Co end up finding her jacket atop a massive tree right in the middle of the woods.
There are a few very well used jumpscares this episode and they work very well with the overall tension of the episode. The moment when we watch flashbacks to the nurses murdering elderly people under their care is one of the most unsettling and shocking moments of the episode, it’s so outright brutal that you don’t want to look at it and I think that’s part of what makes AHS so good.
The part where Lee starts drinking again feels forced and the way that it is just essentially brushed aside feels very much like it was handled clumsily and was not needed in the episode. However, I think it could play a major factor in future episodes as we see her lose her mind over Flora and start drinking again.
Overall, this episode explained a lot, whilst raising a lot more questions. It was tense, scary and brutal. Everything AHS should be. This is no doubt one of the best seasons yet and if you aren’t watching it, you should be. I cannot wait to see where they take this storyline. Top notch stuff, keep it G33k.
