So, 2017 is finally here after a year that many of us are likely going to want to forget, so rather than writing a post about what I liked about the year just gone, I decided to look to the future and count down my 5 most anticipated games of 2017. This list is purely the games that I am looking forward to this year, not representative of anyone else’s views. So, let’s get on with the list!
#5: Spider-Man [Late 2017]
Very little is known about the upcoming Spider-Man game from Insomniac, but from the short trailer we got at E3 2016, it looks like it will be the first good Spidey game since Spider-Man 2 way back in 2004. It will be an open-world story that isn’t adapting any existing story, so it has a lot of room to evolve and create its own self-contained stories that don’t have to adhere to the often complicated canon from the comics. With the open-world and exciting action, I feel that this will go down as one of the best superhero games ever made.
#4: Outlast 2 [Mid-2017]
Outlast is one of the scariest games ever made. I play a lot of horror games and that game really got under my skin. The way that you explored a haunting (and haunted) hospital with nothing to defend yourself against the horrors inside that building really added an atmosphere of genuine tension and fear that is hard to find in any other game. The sequel will take the terror to a small village in Arizona, where a journalist has to search for his missing wife, all whilst horrifying things are happening around him. There is the risk that the less claustrophobic setting could cause the game to lose some of the elements that made the first entry stand out so much, but I have high hopes for this game and I am more than ready to enter that world once more for another round of fear.
#3: Injustice 2 [Mid-2017]
The reason that Injustice stands out as an amazing fighting game is not just because of the amazing gameplay, but because of the engaging and engrossing storyline that the game showcased. Very little is known about the story for the second instalment in the fighting game series, but we do know that the game will introduce more iconic DC characters, each with new ways to customise their abilities and appearances. Graphically the game looks amazing, seeing as when the first game was released on current-gen consoles it looked somewhat flat, it will be amazing to play an amazing looking Injustice game on the current generation of consoles, on something like the PS4 Pro it would look astonishing to see superheroes battling it out in giant setpieces.
#2: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [Early 2017]
Nintendo has been something of the underdogs of the gaming world for a little while now, starting with the massive commercial failure that was the WiiU, Nintendo has lost credibility in the industry at a breakneck pace. Yet, people seemed to put that behind them when Nintendo announced their new console earlier this year. The new Zelda instalment will be releasing on this platform and from what we have seen, it looks set to make the most of the advanced capabilities of the Switch. The graphics look stunning, giving off some very Wind Waker vibes, the gameplay seems groundbreaking and the story is intriguing. I feel that this game will help return Nintendo to the top of the gaming world, it is definitely one to watch this year.
#1: Resident Evil 7 [January 24th]
Resident Evil is one of, if not the single best horror game series out there, in my opinion. I have been a fan of the series for a long time, but I feel that it went a little downhill starting with 6, however things started to pick up with the excellent Revelations 2. Then the first trailer for 7 released and it looked like it would be channelling a mix of classic Resident Evil with a touch of Outlast, which I instantly loved. Then the Begining Hour Demo released and we got a taste of how scary this game is, that sold me right away. This seems like it will be the game to bring Resident Evil back to the forefront of the horror genre and could honestly be a game changer. Plus, it’s one of the first games to come compatible for PSVR straight out of the box at no extra cost, so if you really want to feel fear, you can play it up close and personal from the get go.
So, those were my personal picks for the games I am looking forward to most in 2017! Do you agree with my picks? Tell me over on Twitter @G33kP0p or in the comments below! I will be bringing you my first impressions of many of these games later this year since JoshTie and myself will be at EGX Rezzed in March to bring you the information you need to know.
